Blood circulation — principles and investigation
Blood follows the heart and blood vessels through pulmonary circulation and circulation throughout the body. Trace the path through the heart chambers and major blood vessels and connect gas exchange in the lungs. Arteries and veins are classified based on whether they leave or return to the heart, not the amount of oxygen.
How does it work?
Right atrium → right ventricle → pulmonary artery → lungs → pulmonary veins → left atrium → left ventricle → aorta → whole body → vena cava → right atrium. Valves prevent reflux.
Right heart → pulmonary circulation → left heart → whole body circulation → right heart
Try this investigation
- Look at the blood cells on the cover turning around and click on the next path to guess. Red is arterial blood with high oxygen, and purple and blue are venous blood with low oxygen. Arteries and veins are classified into whether they come in or out of the heart.
- Run and record the entire cycle at 1x speed. It's a full circle from the right atrium back to the right atrium.
- Just change the beat speed to 2x and record. Even if the regeneration speed is different, the passage order and the location of change in the relative amount of oxygen are the same.
Interpreting your results
What is the role of heart valves?
Valves open and close due to pressure differences, helping with one-way flow. It receives oxygen from the lungs and delivers oxygen throughout the body. The pulmonary artery has less oxygen and the pulmonary veins have more oxygen.
Assumptions and limitations
It is a virtual path state model that follows one blood cell. The oxygen relative amount 0.25·0.95 and travel time are for explanatory purposes only. The color changes after passing through the lungs and the entire body, and the actual oxygen exchange is a continuous process. The actual size, location, and simultaneous beating of the heart and blood vessels have been simplified. It does not cover quantitative prediction of blood pressure, flow rate, coronary circulation, fetal circulation, or diseases.
