Meaning and mechanism
Solar panels convert light into electrical energy, operating with different voltages and currents depending on the load. The open voltage and short-circuit current are values specific to different operating conditions.
In an open state, the current is almost 0, and in a closed state, the terminal voltage is almost 0, so the transmitted power is also small. The product of voltage and current reaches its maximum at the midpoint of the operating range.
Relationships and conditions
The maximum of the P=VI curve is the maximum power point. Even for the same solar cell, changes in irradiance and temperature can change the current–voltage curve and the optimal load.
The experiment utilizes a single diode model and a fixed area. Furthermore, the actual module’s shading, connection method, and losses must be considered as well.
What to observe in the simulation
The load sets the operating point. Power peaks between short circuit and open circuit.
This single-diode model uses 36 series cells over 0.5 m². Shading, series resistance and thermal transients are omitted.
Key relationships and symbols
I = Iph − Is[exp(V/(36nVT)) − 1] · P = VI
| Symbol | Meaning | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| V, I | Operating voltage and current | V, A |
| P | Power delivered to the load | W |
Worked example
How do you locate maximum power at fixed irradiance?
Find the largest product of voltage and current · The load sets the operating point. Power peaks between short circuit and open circuit.
Common misconceptions
- The point with the highest voltage when the system is open does not always represent the point where the largest power is delivered to the load.
